WOMEN PLAYING FOOTBALL?
Next thing you know, they’ll be demanding equality…
TUESDAY 9 OCTOBER, BURTON IN LONSDALE VILLAGE HALL, 7.30pm
Pride of Preston, The Dick, Kerr Ladies 1917-1965
Forget Barcelona, author Gail Newsham claims that the Dick, Kerr Ladies is the most successful football team in the world. Formed by munitions workers in Preston in 1917, the team has quite a story to tell. Come and listen to Gail, the team’s official biographer, tell it. It’s a tale that has particular resonance this year, as we mark not only the centenary of the end of the First World War, but also the centenary of the Representation of the People Act – for all its limitations, a milestone in the history of equal rights. And then of course there was the World Cup… So Gail’s presentation will appeal to history buffs, suffragettes, soccer enthusiasts of both sexes – and those who simply like a good story, particularly if it has a theme of overcoming prejudice. There will be refreshments and an opportunity to talk to Gail afterwards. Tickets £4 on the door (subject to availability) or £3.50 in advance from Burton Village Shop – on sale from late September.
