“Top Tips For The Next Generation Of Yorkshire farmers”
The Farmer Network has for many years supported young people trying to get a foothold in the farming industry. Now with funding support from the Yorkshire Dales and Nidderdale Farming in Protected Landscapes programme, the “Next Gen” program is up and running once again in Yorkshire. There will be a series of winter workshops for 18–40-year-olds looking to start or expand a farming related business.
Two introductory meetings have already taken place with more than 30 young people attending at Hawes in the Yorkshire Dales and Darley in Nidderdale last week, but there is still time for others to join the groups. The workshops will offer an opportunity to hear from specialist speakers and network with other farmers over a free supper.
The first workshop takes place on Tuesday 12th November 2024 from 7pm at the Fountain Hotel, Market Place, Hawes, DL8 3RD, and is entitled “Top tips for applying for tenancies”.
Ian Cairns, a tenant farmer from Northumberland and an independent agricultural consultant, will talk through his top tips for applying for tenancies, including information about shared farming opportunities. Ian was involved with Matt Baker’s “Our Dream Farm” on Channel 4 helping the prospective tenants apply to the National Trust’s Wallingford Estate.
Dales’ farmer Stephen Dixon will also be speaking about his experience of taking on a tenancy in partnership with his brother.
The second workshop takes place on Thursday 14th November 2024 from 7pm at the Wellington Inn, Main Street, Darley, HG3 2QQ and is entitled, “Farm diversification – dos and don’ts”!
Tom Carlisle and Tom Heseltine will talk through how they have diversified their farms including the Do’s and Don’ts, applying for planning and finding funding to support their projects.
