‘Roots to Grow, Wings to fly, Faith to flourish
We are starting to really enjoy time in our great outdoors as the spring weather approaches although we do go outside in waterproofs all year round. Wellies are an essential part of our school uniform. This half term in their forest school sessions our KS1 and nursery pupils have been learning about cooking on a camp fire, art in nature and exploring themes eg St David’s day in our natural environment. They learn essential skills which are then signed off in their wild passport by their teacher. The wild passport goes with them in their journey through school as they learn essential skills. The children made welsh cakes, bread and pancakes on their open fire. This linked in well with their Design Technology work on food in class in which they have cooked eggs, made milkshakes, salad, fruit salad, sandwiches, bread and tasted and evaluated different foods. Our small numbers mean we get through so many more experiences and everyone gets a chance to do everything.
Our KS2 pupils have been making slingshot cars in their design technology lessons and made amazing vehicle nets with card shells on wooden axles. They held wacky races with their completed cars before taking them home. They have now moved onto food technology and have so far fed their families with stuffed peppers, jam tarts and crispy cakes with lots more to come.
On Monday afternoons we always enjoy super science Mondays. This half term our nursery children have been exploring light and shadows, our ks1 have been learning about animals and amongst other things, dissecting animal stools and working out whether the animal was a herbivore, omnivore or carnivore! yuk! – please note – they were not real animal stools!
Rock sorting and investigations have fascinated our Lower Junior pupils and our Upper juniors have been learning all about the human body with detailed investigations into the senses.
We love celebrating world book day and this year was no exception. We held a book breakfast for all our families with a great turn out. We enjoyed breakfast and stories together. You may have seen a photo of our children in the KLRUFC match day programme on 8th March as the amazing players from our school came dressed in their kit, each with their favourite match day programme.
This year for the first time we held a Valentines disco in school and the lighting, sounds and decorations were provided by our staff with treat bags provided by the Friends of Tatham Fells. It was a great night for the children- they loved partying in school!
Our Forest School teacher Mrs Entwistle continues to run our Little Explorers every Friday afternoon at school for preschool, toddlers and their families. Please drop in for a session on Fridays 1:15-2:30pm.
We are happy to give tours of our school to anyone curious about rural village education. Our children love to talk to visitors and you would be amazed by our facilities and pupils. We know it is a commitment to get to us but we believe we are definitely worth going the extra mile and that the supportive community we have is a massive benefit to children’s development. Rural life is a real privilege.
